What Causes Period Pain? Chocolate, Seriously?!
Have you ever wondered why period pain always trigger the desire to binge on sweets especially chocolates in the hope that sugar will alleviate the pain?
Take a deep breath, because I’m about to tell you that chocolate is the culprit of causing period pain.
My heart sank when I was told this because I have a stash of it in my freezer to overindulge myself especially during the time of the month. -guilty as charged!
Of all the things, why chocolate?
Well, basically, craving for sweets during menstruation is often due to high levels of hormones which triggered insulin to increase.
As usual, when your blood sugar is low, the brain sends signals to the body asking it to pump in more fuel andVoila! - you feed your tummy with whatever chocolate you can grab!
These signals are often misinterpreted, as your body is not actually craving for chocolate but it’s actually hungry for the combination of calcium, sugar, and carbs.
All of which are commonly found in chocolate.
According to the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drugs and Biologics, though chocolate stores every food that our brain needs, it contains large amounts oftheobromine which can create a nervous condition that actually accentuates period pain and discomfort.
And more sad news for every chocolate lover out there, though it can alleviate your mood, the amount of sugar, caffeine, and theobromine will make you feel more emotional too.
Alternatively, you can take calcium pills instead of mining it from inside the chocolate.
A research also showed that women who constantly take calcium as part of their everyday supplement will hardly experience period pain.
Let me give you heads up, this supplement tastes nothing like a chocolate bar.
But, if you do decide to treat yourself with chocolate, try to take it minimum. After all, period pain is inevitable, unnecessary suffering is.
